Steve is an attorney whose career and retirement have been devoted to working on behalf of persons charged with or convicted of crimes. As a staff attorney and supervisor with The Legal Aid Society in New York City for twelve years, Steve represented clients in the trial and appellate courts and pursued systemic reform in the city’s adult and juvenile legal systems. In 1988 Steve began a 25 year career as Deputy Assistant Director of the of the Office of Defender Services in the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. In this capacity, he shared responsibility for the leadership, management, and oversight of the federal appointed counsel system. In particular, he focused on the development, execution, and audit of the program’s appropriation; the budgets of individual federal defender organizations; strategic planning and performance assessment; and the representation of death row inmates. After retiring in 2013, Steve became a founding board member of Advancing Real Change, (ARC) Inc., which works towards a more just and humane criminal legal system by unearthing the life histories of people facing extreme sentences. During his 10 years with the ARC, Inc. board, Steve served as treasurer (three years) and president/board chair (six years).
Steve has degrees from The Johns Hopkins University (B.A.) and Syracuse University College of Law (J.D.).
